My leaky bucket overflowed

For the uninitiated, a leaky bucket is a theory used for networks traffic shaping. I like the name. I imagine it to be a bucket, with a hole and a filter at the bottom. Water is poured into the bucket from the top. Water escapes from the hole and filter.

This is a nice analogy for work. W is for water. W is for work. The bucket is the capacity for work. The hole in the bucket determines how fast we can drain the water or get work done. The bigger the hole, the faster the water flows out, the faster the work output!

Under normal circumstance, the boss will pour water in and try to keep the bucket full. At the same time, the boss may send to employees to courses, to force the hole in their bucket to become bigger. Bear in mind the filter may get dirty at times. This will block up the hole and reduce the water leakage. When this happens, it means we need a rest. This is why we get annual leaves – some time away from office to clean up the bucket.

Sometimes work piles up too quickly and over the bucket’s capacity, water overflow. Some of the water does not even enter the bucket and get mixed with the filtered water. This is messy. Completed work and uncompleted work got mixed up and it seems impossible to separate them.

This is how I feel now. Work keep pouring in. My leaky bucket has been working for too long and now the hole is all blocked up with dirt and fatigue. I foresee a flood coming my way. Just hope that everything will be fine.
