Things change fast. Of the 2 colleagues I am most comfortable working with, one has left and one is going to leave. By next month, I will be the the most senior member in the team, besides the team leader. This is not something I expect, but I am here to learn. I shall take anything that comes my way.

Watch out! Leion is here!

During my birthday last year, I had a wish to change my vocation. I managed to achieve my wish recently. It came as a surprise. I had not been actively looking out for the change but a change in market conditions led to many calls to me. I have left my resume on a few recruitment sites many many many moons ago. The calls just came to me and I went on a few interviews with the interesting ones. I ad rejected many insurance related careers. It was a coincidence that many people had mentioned to me before that I could consider a career in that direction. Well that is a story for another time.

Back to topic, I was dreaming myself going into a more lucrative sector. My career at the ex-company was finally about to pay off in less than 2 months then this offer came long. I was 98% to the next level. I thought long and hard and decided to give up my current status and to start anew in the new sector.

I am already 2 weeks into the new work place. I must say that the team, arrangement and organisation could be better. But the opportunity comes where there is disorder. I am picking up new things and I want to learn more!

The choice for change will not be a wrong one and I will ensure so. All the best Leion.

The disappointing part is that some (or all?) of the application are not supporting this yet. I still get requests to change the the unsecured http connections in order to access the applications. The message below shows one of such requests. I feel it defeats the purpose of going with the secured connection in the first place, and I refuse to go back to http and hence not using those apps. Let us see when the applications will take up https connections.

Today I witnessed a very disappointing scene on the train.

I boarded the train but could not find a seat. The train was not very crowded, but I noticed a pregnant lady standing near the side seats. She seemed to be in an advanced stage of pregnancy. Usually the side seats have stickers requesting people to give up their seats. All the seats were occupied. I looked at the person on the side seat. She was another lady with baby bump – smaller but surely one. I was getting annoyed with the next nearest person for not giving up his seat. He was a youngster at most in his twenties. How could he have just ignored the poor mother to be?

Just while I was still fighting my internal struggle to request the young man to give up his seat, the seated pregnant lady have up her seat! The bigger lady said you are pregnant too! She replied nvm and walked towards the other cabins. I saw her found another seat which was good. The bigger lady took the seat. All the while, all the other seated passengers appeared not to have saw them.

I was really angry and ashamed of myself for not acting what I should. How would the 2 ladies think?

I have just traded by HTC Hero for Samsung Galaxy S 2 or 3 weeks ago. So far it is still easy to adapt to the new interface. In fact, I do not miss the Sense interface much. There are pros and cons from both vendors but I am still loving SGS. All the more now that the official Froyo Android 2.2 upgrade has been delivered to this phone.

I received news last night near midnight that Froyo was available and wasted no time. Boot into windows and looked for Samsung Kies to download and install. Downloading a 135mb file at 800kB to 1Mb per second still took a considerable 2 or 3 minutes. The wait was unbearable… When I finally fired up the installation, the installation got stuck at a .NET 4.0 framework part. The good thing is that there was a warning message stating that this part may take a long time. It took like forever before the KIES was properly installed.

The good thing is that detecting my SGS and installing the firmware was a breeze. Well, 30 minutes is a breeze compared to the .NET part.

The new firmware is I900DXJPA.

The upgrade did not mess up my installed applications, contacts, sms or call logs. The bad thing is that some of my installed apps are not 2.2 ready. I have thought that there was something wrong with the upgrade and did a full reset and I realised this halfway when I am reinstalling my apps. Not a big issue. Just some save games got resetted. Not really a big deal here. The one thing I am not happy is that the linking of my google contacts with the facebook contacts was not saved. This is the part where HTC has done better.

I notice there is an new app called Press Reader. I assume this is a Samsung app as I do not recall having saw this in 2.2 Hero roms before. It does not launch, only say Service will be available first. I guess can only wait to see what is does. There is a similar app like this for iphone. Seems like this is a port over from iphone.

Went to a self motivation talk today.

Some notes from today´s talk.

People want the following from their job:

Recognition

Appreciation

Being valued

Yes. I was not able to put to word what I want from my job. This is exactly what I want from my job.

Attitude / Abilities / Values ? Behavior ? Consequences

What we believe and say ? What we do

Importance + confidence ? Motivation

Mastery + Autonomy + Purpose = Motivation

High motivation at work = extrinsic motivation + intrinsic motivation

WINE

Wants

Interests

Needs

Expection

Overall I think the talk was good. What is left now is to look for my purpose and wants. Once I am clear of it. I will be able to have a defined direction and goal to work towards.

I had wanted to get a watch. However, this is more a want, as I could have read the time off my mobile phone. As such, I keep my mobile phone close to me so I can keep track of time without the need to use a watch.

I managed to keep my “want” under check till recently I viewed some online videos on radiation from mobile phones. The videos basically showed a few kernels of corn surrounded by ringing mobile phones. The corns pop to show that the mobile phones produce enough radiation to heat up the corn and make them explode.

This set me thinking – I keep my mobile phone with me most of the time in my pants pocket. Am I absorbing much of this radiation?

The watch “want” status escalated to the “need” status. I began to look around for watches that I like. Forums were a good help, so is my friend Jits. This review led me to choose the Orange Monster.

Basically, I love orange and the bright illume. The more I read about it, the more I fell in love with it. Alas this is not cheap from the watch shops near my place. Internet is a powerful research tool. I managed to find this shop that sells almost half the price I would have paid at the shops nearby. Well, today is the day I make the kill.

My Seiko Orange Monster

The watch is a tad heavy but I believe my arms will get used to it soon. Now, I can keep my mobile phone in my bag to keep the radiation source away.

Yup. I just leveled up to level 29 today.

I have 2 wishes.

Form a party

Change a vocation

Party

I had the opportunity to form a party at many points of my life. However, things do not always go the way I wanted and the parties had to be broken up. As always, I hope the next prospect who comes along will be the final one, and we can form a permanent party and grow the party to a formidable one, and with a reasonable size.

Vocation

I am still in the same vocation I started out with. I am not that bad with it, but I lack the direction to put in all my might to truly excel in it. Should I remain in this vocation, or try out a new one? I need to get this straighten before my next level!

Passion run is the second run I participated myself. This is a smaller scale event compared to Standard Chartered Run. The event is less organised. The running route was not revealed till a very late stage.

Most of the volunteers around the race route seems very young. They are probably lower secondary school students. I think they are not suitable as they do not seem to be able to render much help if someone were to faint.

As the run was held at East Coast Park, the tracks are not wide enough when everyone was fresh and running together at the start point. This was alleviated after 10km. Thankfully the route is rather flat.

Run times

Compared to my previous run, this run I got tired at a later stage. However towards the last 5km, my leg muscles were overworked and nearing the cramp stage. I had to stiffen up the muscles and drag my body along like a robot. This was especially so at the last kilometer. Nonetheless, I feel good to be able to push myself to complete the run.

Finishing

Today I went to a Japanese restaurant of the M*F chain. This is a dessert place located at the basement of Ang Mo Kio Hub. I am surprised to find the place rather deserted at lunch time. My group of 12 had no issues at all to find seats.

Because of work commitments, I reached the place the latest. I was surprised to be told that many items were not available. It was lunch time and they are open for business and they have limited choices. I went to order at the counter as I had a membership card for the restaurant chain. I was told some of our orders were not available and even the staff are not clear on what was available and what not. Had I went there alone, I would have left the place and settled for another eatery. It was only after another round of menu choosing that we managed to get our orders in. The bill came up to $130+ after discount. We were given another loyalty card. This is one of the most insincere card I have seen in a long time. It works like this – gather 5 or 10 chops to get a free dessert. To get a chop, the total spending in the restaurant has to be over $10. I find it really amused to be given the card with one chop with a total spending like this.

I settled for Salmon Mayo Bento. My order came the last and it look really different from what I saw in the menu. The picture in the menu looked like raw reddish salmon. Nevermind that the bento looked different from that menu. For some reasons, the salmon is all covered in the white mayo. I could not see any tinge of redness. Well, it looked like tuna to me. I tasted it, and it tasted cooked tuna to me. I took the bento and asked the casher about it. She and her colleague assured me that I was served salmon. I did not take a strong stand that it was tuna I was served. I ate enough salmon to know that was not salmon I was served. I went back and finish up my meal as there was supposed to be a meeting soon. As I ate, I grew angry with myself for not being assertive. I still believe I was cheated. For some reasons, I had reminded myself to relook at the notes from a course on being assertive earlier in the day. Though I did not have the time to look at the notes, it was a coincidence with this incident.

I have decided to boycott this particular branch. LOUSY EXPERIENCE to the max. Little wonder that place was so empty during the busy lunch hour.
