My linksys WRT54GC failed me after 4 good years and after much research and ponder, I finally got myself the Asus WL520GU wireless router for $85. It comes with a usb connector for printer server. The interface of original firmware( version 3.0.0.8) for this router is better than that in Linksys. I like the QoS function of this router. Best of all, the firmware can be flashed with more functionality!

After deliberating for a week, I finally decided to give it a go and flash the router with a open source firmware and risking breaking the brand new router. All is good. Now I have better functionality and Network Attached Storage(NAS) capability with the router. I have yet to test the ftp with the NAS. I do not have much use for this function yet but the ability to have this thrills me nonetheless. Somehow, I can feel the speedier connection on the new firmware already.

Below are the steps that I have taken to flash and upgrade my router.

Set the router’s ip as 192.168.1.1

Set static ip for your computer as 192.168.1.10, mask 255.255.255.0 and connect to the router via lan port 1

Download the NEWD_mini_asus.trx and the NEWD_mini_usb_ftp.bin files from here

Flash the firmware: Pull the power of the router while pushing the reset button. Release when the power button is flashing

Use the Asus firmware restore tool and upload the NEWD_mini_asus.trx file

After the flash is successful, log in to the router via telnet: root/admin

Type the following commands to reset the user settings: erase nvram then reboot

Open up the browser and surf to 192.168.1.1

A password page will come up, just skip and go Administration tab, then choose Firmware upgrade

Now upload the NEWD_mini_usb_ftp.bin file for the real thing.

Wait for the upload to complete before returning to 192.168.1.1

Save a new username and password. The new router is ready to fly

Google has done it again.

Innovating. This time they come up with a game. A user/player can just log in and label some random pictures taken from sites that Google bot crawls. Some random player will be shown the same picture. If the 2 players labeled the picture with a same keyword, then points will be awarded to both the players.

In Google’s words:

You’ll be randomly paired with a partner who’s online and using the feature. Over a 90-second period, you and your partner will be shown the same set of images and asked to provide as many labels as possible to describe each image you see. When your label matches your partner’s label, you’ll earn some points and move on to the next image until time runs out. After time expires, you can explore the images you’ve seen and the websites where those images were found. And we’ll show you the points you’ve earned throughout the session.

This means there will be humans labelling the pictures with keywords. The keywords will be somewhat accurate because the 2 players are randomly chosen and for them to come up with identical keywords, the keywords chosen must be related to the picture. Points system will get some gamers addicted. They will play again and again and again, with the aim of getting the highest score. and a name in the rank list.

This means free work done for Google. Google will get more accurate image labels for free. Labelers will get their fun trying to climb up rank.

Win Win situation. Google and Google searchers.

RSS is really a good thing.

I used it for reading my friends’ blogs off a single site. Recently I found out that one of a friend’s blog do not seem to be updated on my RSS reader. I surf to his blog and realise what happened.

He had put an entry that is dated in the future. This means that this entry will always be the first entry in his blog. Not a problem actually. Just that my google reader no longer works. All his new entries are no longer picked up. I suspect this is because the reader only matches the first entry in the RSS feed to determine if there are any new entries.

While I have not tried using other RSS readers, I think the same results will be reproduced. So it is back to normal blog hoping to get all the information now. At least before google reader change the way it loads new lists…

Now I can cut memory usage on my beloved firefox on demand! The way to do it is simple. All I need to do is to minimise my FF window, then I restore it again. This is exactly what I am always doing when I work on my computer. So this is really painless for me. However there is a step that is needed to be done before the magic trick mentioned above can work. The trick is to do it:

Type about:config in the Firefox address bar

Writeclick on the page and choose New Boolean

Enter config.trim_on_minimize into the preference name

Set it to true

Restart your Firefox baby.

I got the information from here. I think this is a good way to check memory usage of Firefox and that it will keep out memory wastage. Try it. It really helps.

Do you like me?
I may not know.

Or am I bothering you?
I do have a way of finding out….

If you are chatting with your friend online, then will you close the chat window whilst the chat is still going on? No I think. But what are the reasons to do so?
I have come up with a few:

You are busy and the chat is hindering your work.

You do not like your chatter.

Your taskbar is too overcrowded with programs…

You are at somewhere, where you do not wan others to know that you are chatting

Being seen chatting with this chatter is embarrassing.

Most of us are users of msn messenger and we do not have a way to know if the other party has been closing that chat window….

BUT

What if that is a way to get that information? How will you feel if your crush/good friend/buddy has been doing this all the time? How will you feel?

Look at this:

This is GAIM
It is a 3rd party messenger client for MSN, ICQ and other chat networks.
This is what I use when I log into my Ubuntu OS.

Sometimes I see the windows closing information I will take that the person is busy. But if I see it all the time, I know about my status in that person's mind?

It has been my dream to have my firefox with me whereever I go, with the same settings and extensions that I have on my home computer. Now, I have it!

The program is called portable firefox.

Download from here: http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/portable_firefox/

It is a zip file. Just unzip the files and copy your profiles settings into the profile folder of the zip. Launch the portable firefox program and we are free to surf the net with our very own settings and extensions!

Cool! Keep up the good work!

Many blogs support ping. Ping means to tell another site, mostly blog directories and search engines that you have new content. Even my blog I have configured ping services to ping some sites.

Introducing a new server from the creator of this new ping database program.

http://www.pingoat.com/

Currently, this program supports 50 ping sites. All you need to do is to input your site name and url then click on which sites to ping then click the GO button and the sites are informed of your blog's presence! I recommand not to click all 50 sites at one go. This will slow down the ping. Maybe spilt the ping into 5 times will be better.

Here are some comment on how others think of this cool service

Comments on the offical site

Why not give it a try now?
